As the GM (General Motors) UAW workers strike continues… Lets talk:

***ALL NUMBERS LISTED BELOW ARE GESTIMATES NO FACTUAL NUMBERS – THEY ARE WHAT I FEEL ARE REPRESENTATIVE OF ACTUAL NUMBERS AS WELL AS WHAT I SEE IN MY LOCAL AREA OF ROCHESTER, NY***

The more I think about this the more I have society concerns… Concerns about our local financial struggles. Concerns about how this strike actually affects everything in our communities that have UAW workers on strike. It is bigger than GM and UAW but nobody is talking about that!

What about the local watering hole across from the GM plant that relies on the income it brings in from every GM worker that stops there after work to grab a drink before going home. If every worker who stops at that bar grabs 1 beer for $8 and ehhh 14 workers stop there a day that equals $112/a day and $560/wk and this is a conservative number. This number doesn’t included the standard few dollar tip that people leave for the bartender.

Now we come to the bartender that is making less money but still needing to pay the babysitter while she is working. Less tips = less money to pay to work = less money to pay for her regular bills… car note, rent/mortgage, gas and electric, phone bill, internet bill, gas and car insurance, groceries, water, and all the other life expenses.

Then we look at the WHOLE picture of it:

These hard working men who build our GM vehicles are now making NOTHING! They aren’t making half or 1/3 rd they are making NOTHING! They have also now lost health insurance for themselves and the families they are helping to support and care for!

With this drastic income change these men and the families they help support are now facing enormous financial limitations. Paying bills has become difficult. Going out for dinners isn’t happening, mental health medications aren’t affordable, shopping for extra things isn’t happening… this is temporarily changing our local economy as well as the local economy of many areas in our country! The list of who this UAW strike financially negatively impacts keeps getting longer!

This is NOT me saying anything negative about the strike! I support the UAW workers! 100% supporting this strike but I also think that GM executives are missing key elements that will change how people look at the company if this continues another week!

A local rep for a dealership told me yesterday that new GM cars are not being sold and delivered because if they have a recall they cannot be delivered without the recall repaired before delivery. I guess most of the recalls are unable to be fixed because the GM parts are now MIA! While GM is insisting it is prepared for this strike to continue they are going to continue to throw money down the drain because they are unable to sell new vehicles that have an existing recall. This strike is also a problem for vehicles needing to be repaired because no GM built parts are being delivered to any auto repair shops or dealerships.

Way to go UAW!

Bring GM to the ground! GM should be doing so much better by its employees!
